Pirate Paddle Action
On Sunday, March 10, a small group of Ohana Pirate Paddlers headed out on a local adventure from Mike's to check out the newly renovated MLK Shoreline Boat Ramp along the San Leandro Bay.
The group encountered dragons, human-eating sharks and seals with attitudes . . . in their nightmares. In reality, they enjoyed pleasant temperatures, light winds and birds such as willets and godwits. They thoroughly enjoyed each other's company, and even scored a bridge (for those keeping track).
The new boat ramp area provides a welcoming resting place and spiffy astroturf for everyone's boards. Nice!
Bridge and Island Program
The Bay Area Bridge and Island Program (B & I) is the brainchild of Coach Mike, and was inspired by his own trip under and around every bridge and island in the entire Bay Area (https://www.mikespaddle.com/blogs/paddling-bridges-and-islands-of-san-francisco-bay/bridges-and-islands). Coast Guard Island was the inaugural trip in the B & I Program, and the conditions were ideal. Here's hoping that this is a good luck charm that follows all subsequent trips! Paddlers who complete each B & I segment will receive a sticker to mark the auspicious occasion. Fill up your board with B & I stickers of glory! The next trip is on Saturday, March 16 - Treasure and Yerba Buena Island. See below for other dates (and more will be coming; it could take up to two years to complete them all!).
Dock Progress
The MLK Shoreline is not the only local area getting a facelift. Sea Trek and Alex have been hard at work on their new docks and the results are impressive! How will one ever decide from where to launch? So much space! So many choices!
Other Ohana Events
- Second Bridge and Island Paddle: Treasure Island and Yerba Buena
As mentioned above, B & I #2 is Saturday, March 16. Be ready to hit the water at 10am from the Treasure Island Boat Ramp. This paddle will circumnavigate Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island and go under the Bay Bridge (both the old and new spans). The forecast is lots of sun! See TeamSnap.to sign up and for details; see WhatsApp for any last-minute announcements or questions.
- The Return of Fitness and Race League!
The Ohana FRL offers a series of fun training paddles to work on skills and fitness. To elevate all members that attend, we try to stick together as a large group, but sometimes split off into different groups for different skills, paces or to have sessions with a visiting coach. All levels are welcome, but highly recommend taking the Level Up Clinics if you are a newer paddler.
